Description

Resistance comes in all forms...this course will
delve into resistance in the form of art and
introduce community based activism as a crucial
point of origin for such a type of resistance. It
will review a variety of historical and
contemporary works of art as resistance in and
outside of the fine arts world, and communally
discuss the impact that each work has had on
social justice movements and / or the larger
world. Students will also study community activist
frameworks that can inform such types of
resistance work and why such frameworks are
necessary. This learning process will be aided by
Zapantera Negra: An Artistic Encounter Between
Black Panthers and Zapatistas a book that
documents an artistic encounter between Emory
Douglas, the Minister of Culture of the Black
Panther Party, and the southern Mexican indigenous
revolutionary group EZLN aka Zapatistas to not
only artistically collaborate but to also address
the question of what is the role of revolutionary
art in the times of distress? And will use the
work of the American author, women's rights
activist and black feminist, Adrienne Aaree Brown
in Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing
Worlds which lays out activist frameworks of
community mindful and politically intentional
strategies for a better world.

Open Seminar is a series of seminars of special
topics chosen by the instructor.
