Description

This independent study group will focus on
researching and developing ceramic glazes from raw
chemicals.
Students will choose a type of glaze and/or color
to develop throughout the semester beginning with
published
glaze recipes and modifying those recipes to
generate custom colors and characteristics.
Students will learn
(1) to identify glaze chemicals and their
attributes, (2) the process of experimentally
adapting glaze recipes to
achieve the desired result, and (3) techniques for
loading and firing electric kilns. Students will
meet
independently with the instructor throughout the
course and will be expected to present their
findings at the end
of the semester. There is a $50.00 course fee
which will provide the raw chemicals, clay and
supplies needed
for the semester. Due to the nature of the
chemicals involved in glaze chemistry, students
will be required to
provide their own personal protective equipment
including disposable gloves and a particle
respirator.
