Description

This course will cover the processes for
constructing three dimensional sculptures and
objects in clay while exploring the material and
metaphorical relationships between light and
shadow. Through exercises in experimentation, we
will work with intuition and chance to channel
shadow energy as a generative creative process.
Projects will explore archetype through Jungian
and tarot imagery as well as combining clay and
light through reflection, obfuscation and
translucency to illuminate space and architecture.
We will learn the processes for constructing three
dimensional sculptures and objects in clay and
undertake the fundamental methods for building
including slab and coil and traditional finishing
techniques such as firing and glazing.

Students will be encouraged to apply these
techniques both in the construction of static
objects as well as experimenting with
incorporating the material into other areas of
their practice. The class will culminate in a
group exhibition and critique. 25lbs of clay will
be provided to each person though students should
be prepared to potentially purchase additional
material if their proposed projects require it.
