Academic Level

Description
What does it mean to have the basic necessities of
life? Are food, water, and shelter enough? Do we
not need human interaction, culture, and art? We
will engage basic survival strategies, from
gleaning to codeswitching, to address questions of
environmental need and sustenance, identity and
belonging. Sculpture projects will involve making
devices for foraging food, building shelter, and
constructing community. Artwork will be born of
necessity but driven by aesthetics, using our
hands to shape the world we inhabit. We will
employ sculptural methods developed throughout
human history to confront tensions between
individual desires and collective societal needs.
Our goal is to illuminate our choices and how they
impact survival.
