Description
What makes an artist-run space different from
another gallery or non-profit organization?
Artist-run spaces are founded by and driven by the
ideas and dreams of artists, though they often
transform over time. Through a series of case
studies, this course offers a brief history of
alternative and artist-run spaces in Los Angeles,
examining how ideas around alternatives have
shifted since the 1970s. We will also look at
contemporary artist-run spaces and curatorial
endeavors that seek to expand and enrich the
cultural landscape. There will be a focus on the
sustainability of these projects and we will
discuss how they operate in relation to
capitalism, systemic racism, able-ism, and
gentrification.
