Postcolonial Theory and Art Practice

This course explores postcolonial, decolonial, and anticolonial theories, poetics, and art in order to expose students to varying theoretical and discursive frameworks and art practices that can help inform their intellectual journey and creative work. We will explore a variety of topics including precolonial meaning making, subaltern studies, global diasporas, resistance movements, and political critique, as well as the work of artists around the world making work reckoning with their complexities and challenges. This course is meant to motivate deep reflection of the political and historical themes that are relevant to the student's work. Class assignments will include writing reflections on the reading and artwork, as well as making creative projects that engage the material. Students will have the opportunity to respond to texts through a variety of mediums, including visual, sound, and performance art.
