Description
In this course students will focus on creating new
compositions that are hybrid in nature. Students
will be tasked with creating new works based on
the blending or juxtaposition of varying sonic
elements, drawn from specific historical eras or
genres. We will explore what the word genre means,
and dive into the various characteristics that
define such sounds including but not limited to
techno, ambient, dub, house, drone and more. After
taking this course students will have a better
understanding of pre-existing musical traditions
within contemporary electronic and experimental
music, and how to employ these traditions to
effect in their own compositions. The stranger the
mix the sweeter the result! Students should be
fluent in the digital audio workstation of their
choice and be prepared to present new work every
two weeks for group listening and critique.
