Description
With an eye for technique and mentorship
opportunities, choreographer Laura Gorenstein
Miller will introduce students to a fiercely
physical, hyper-romantic form of partnering. By
workshopping Miller's All Shook Up, students will
explore how to process and embody meaning without
the limitation of language.
All Shook Up is a four-part suite set to the
sultry, genre-defining songs of Elvis Presley.
Miller, for the Winter Session, will first set a
section that demonstrates how dance can serve as a
medium for protest, specifically through the lens
of Roe vs. Wade. Then Miller will workshop and
collaboratively design a second section of
viscerally romantic gender-inclusive duets with
the students in real-time. The dance situates love
and loss as concurrent forces, indulging
audiences' desire to share in a night of
resistance, jubilation, and passion.
Miller has premiered work at venues around the
world, including at The Joyce Theater, Lincoln
Center, The Royal Opera House, UCLA's Royce Hall,
Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica, the Alberta Jubilee
Theaters, The Getty Center, The Getty Villa, and
The Broad Stage. Her choreography has been set on
American Ballet Theater, American Ballet Theatre's
Studio Company, CalArts, The Milwaukee Ballet, and
Bodytraffic, among others. Miller has
choreographed numerous animated films, including
the Oscar-nominated Puss In Boots, Madagascar 3,
The Addams Family, the Netflix animated feature
Trouble, and Rise of the Guardians. She recently
choreographed an animated feature film with
original music by composer Alan Menken for
Skydance and Apple Studios and is now
choreographing The Smurfs for Paramount Pictures,
starring Rhianna as Smurfette. Miller has worked
at several academic institutions, including as a
Guest Lecturer at Brown University and a Guest
Artist at the CalArts Choreolab. Miller has also
choreographed augmented and virtual reality
projects for New Frontiers at the Sundance Film
Festival, Microsoft, and the Future of
Storytelling. She is the founder of Helios Dance
Theater, a graduate of CalArts, and studied at the
Laban Center in London.
