Description

SUBLEVEL is an online literary magazine devoted to
the nexus of literature, poetics, art, criticism,
philosophy, culture, and politics based in the
CalArts MFA Creative Writing Program, in The
School of Critical Studies. SUBLEVEL inherits and
reflects the dynamism of contemporary Los Angeles
as a hub of literature, art, and activism, while
also stretching beyond our locality.
We make no hard distinctions between creative and
critical approaches, but rather celebrate writing
of any kind that we find stimulating, timely, or
otherwise compelling. Each year one edition of
SUBLEVEL is produced on our online platform, and
includes commissioned and open-call submissions of
original essays, interviews, fiction, poetry,
roundtables, hybrid forms, and other features.
There is also a distinct annual print component,
SUBLEVEL B-sides, which highlights original
content not available in the online publication.
SUBLEVEL often hosts panel discussions, events and
readings as part of community building and
promotion of the magazine. This class offers a
unique opportunity to develop your voice in the
context of others but also to work towards
producing something that will take place in the
world and last beyond your residency in the
Program. The course is therefore a combination of
on-the-job training and a professional survey and
assessment of the field, in which you develop and
leverage the skills of making things happen and
team work, which at the same time requires a sharp
imagination, a reflexive mind and critical eye on
the development of new content that is timely and
takes a leading role in showcasing the cultural
and artistic conversations that are rising right
now.
