Description
Visibility & Authority: Images of Asian America is
a seminar that examines the politics of
portraiture by focusing on the relationship
between still and moving images, and constructions
of Asian identity in America. Taking an
intersectional and interdisciplinary approach to
the subject matter, topics covered include the
political, economic, social, and technological
forces at play between "East" and "West", and the
legacy of these forces embedded in the visual
representations of AAPI individuals and
communities. In addition to the portrayal of
Asians and Asianness in the United States in
media, this course highlights the work of artists
of Asian descent from the 19th century through
present America whose practices engage such
topics. Coursework includes significant reading,
class discussion, group projects, presentations
and research.
